‘I always wanted to play baseball’

Eric Mackenzie always knew he wanted to play baseball. “I always wanted to play baseball,” Eric Mackenzie said. He was born in Glendon, Alberta in 1932 and grew up on the farm. From a young age, he knew that the farming life was not for him, but it was all Glendon really had to offer. So he set his eyes on a seemingly impossible dream: Baseball.

His father encouraged him to play. When Eric came of age in 1949, life in Glendon was tough. WWII had just ended, and jobs were few and far between. He bought a one-way ticket to Leamington, ON to tryout for the big leagues.

Centenarian celebrates 103rd birthday

Born in December 1917, Ruth Wilson came into the world after a very long car ride from Sudbury, ON, to Toronto. The over four-hour drive was insisted upon by Ruth’s mother, who was nervous of giving birth in the then rural town.

Centenarians reveal their secret to a long life

An overwhelming enthusiasm for life is a strong indication for longevity, according to the centenarians living at Sienna Senior Living’s 87 residences and communities. From riding in the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Big Bike for Heart at 107, taking part in a virtual world-wide cycling tour at 101, to finding love at 100, these centenarians prove that life in your 100s can be just as full as life in your 20s — maybe more so.

As soon as Michele’s youngest son started kindergarten, her training began. Since 2004, she has competed in 10 Ironman Triathlons, with plans to run another two so that she can compete in the World Championship, which is held in Hawaii.

One stitch at a time

A sulky sled and its rider makes its way through the snow, pulled by a chestnut horse. The stunning fabric imagery, created in 1983 by Jane Dixon is featured on Sienna’s 2020 Holiday Card. Winter Sulky Rider is part of a two-piece exhibit at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa, ON. The other piece in the set, Summer Sulky Rider completed in 1984, depicts a summer scene, which is more typical for sulky riding.
