There’s nothing like spending an afternoon fishing with family and friends. That’s why residents at Mariposa Gardens Retirement and Care Community in Osoyoos, BC, as well as members of their day program, were happy to participate in the fifth annual Fishing Forever event with their family and friends. The event was held at the Strohmann family’s fishing pond on Anarchist Mountain, and organized by Accessible Okanagan.

It has been 20 years since Johnny played with his old band.

Residents cheered on their chosen runner as rubber duckies raced to the finish in this fundraiser for United Way. Residents and team members at Waterford Kingston Retirement Residence in Kingston, ON, spent the afternoon in the summer sunshine watching the race. Team members Mari and Josh got into their water galoshes and created a current to help the ducks on their way.

The warmth of human connection is more than a phrase, it’s a feeling that spreads from person to person through kind words and thoughtful gestures. It’s an important part of the culture at Lake Country Lodge Retirement and Care Community in Lake Country, BC, where team members recently came together to celebrate their commitment to spreading the warmth throughout their community.

These mini horses trotted down the paths at Kingsmere Retirement Residence in Alliston, ON, and right into the hearts of residents and team members. Look below to see some of the smiles they brought with them.

The sound of drums and the shimmer of a tambourine echo down the busy Vancouver street. It’s 1914, Charlie Chaplin is starring in his first film, WWI is on the brink of outbreak, and the first electric traffic light is installed. A streetcar passes by the corner where the Salvation Army band is playing, and the driver calls out to the drummer “you’ll break my windows one of these days!”

Every Tuesday between 10:30 and noon, Jeannie and Valmai disappear into a world pressed between inky pages.

It started in the spring, as white flowers bloomed on a bush outside Jane’s window. She picked the small flowers and hung them to dry around her bookcase. Already, she was thinking about the joy they could bring.

Jane Pristach has always looked out for those who need her help.

The golden lion lets out an eternal roar, its ruby eyes glinting. It holds a stunning amethyst in its mouth, and watches over the two golden eagles circling below it, who grasp gold sceptres and a long line of pearls in their talons. Together, they complete the hilt of a 4-foot long sword.

Sculpted Canadian Geese perch on the fence, prepared to take flight. In the garden, squirrels reach for the little door that grants them a peanut. These wood carvings were crafted by Paul Juhlke, environmental services manager at Lincoln Park Retirement Residence in Grimsby. Recently, Paul’s been using his skills to do more than add magic to Lincoln Park; he’s been using them to form bonds with residents.
