April 10 ^th is the 100^th day of the year, and what better time to celebrate the many centenarians at Aspira who seem to have perfected the art of living a long and healthy life? We sat down with residents ranging in age from 100 to 107 to find out if they have a secret recipe for living life to the fullest, or just really good genes.

Love has a way of surprising us — especially later in life. Just when we think certain chapters are closed, new ones quietly begin. In retirement living, days are shaped by connection, shared moments, and the comfort of community. Friendships grow naturally, routines overlap, and sometimes, a special bond occurs. These are stories of love found not in spite of age or circumstance, but because of the time, openness, and space to truly know one another. They remind us that it’s never too late for companionship — and that some of life’s most meaningful relationships can begin when you least expect them.

By the time George Lambert moved into Aspira Harvest Crossing, he already felt like part of the furniture. For years he had been visiting a friend who lived there, turning up so often that people assumed he was already a resident. “Residents and staff would always call me George and ask if I lived here. It was just like living here,” he said. “Everybody knows me now, I thought, so I might as well move in.”

At 88, Mary Kleinschmidt is living proof that age is truly just a number. A mother of four, grandmother of eight, and great-grandmother of six, Mary’s life has been defined by resilience, resourcefulness, and a great sense of humour. Now a resident at Cedar Crossing, she reflects on her journey with warmth, clarity, and unmistakable wit.

At 90 years old, Peggy Graham is no stranger to hard work, big family dinners, and life in a small town. Born and raised in Corbyville, Ontario, Peggy has spent her entire life just outside Belleville. “I lived in one little village in Corbyville, Ontario all my life,” she said with pride. A mother of eight, grandmother to 15, and great-grandmother to 17, her busy life has been full of family and purpose.

When Al Rodgerson speaks, you don’t just hear about his life — you sort of experience it. With a voice equal parts candid and warm, Al recounted several decades’ worth of stories, spanning across North America, his careers and his crafts. Now a resident at Aspira Royale Place, he shares not only his past, but how retirement living has become a new chapter — one that still includes purpose, community, and the occasional movie night.

This Canada Day, we’re celebrating the voices, stories, and reflections of residents who have lived, served, and journeyed across this great nation. Through their words, we’re reminded of the pride, resilience, and gratitude that define what it means to call Canada home.

Born in Manitoba in 1920, Ethel's early life was defined by independence, curiosity, and a deep love for learning and nature. An only child, she spent countless hours immersed in books, growing a lifelong passion for reading and consuming knowledge.

Gladys' passion for tending to the garden beds at Aspira West Park Crossing is truly admirable. As Resident Council Co-Chairperson and a key member of the welcoming and social committees, she goes above and beyond to support her fellow residents. Her genuine kindness and dedication are deeply valued, from encouraging new residents to join in activities to finding the perfect card for every occasion. Her efforts make the community a more vibrant and welcoming place, and everyone is grateful for all she does.

Every July 1, Canadians around the country and those scattered across the globe unite in a grand celebration of Canada Day - a tribute to the country’s rich history and diversity. It’s a day that holds a special place in every Canadian’s heart, especially the senior citizens who have been the bedrock of our society, playing an indispensable role in molding the Canada we know and love.

Rose Dolgy, a spirited, quick-witted 106-year-old resident of Kensington Place, has lived a life filled with rich experiences, unwavering dedication, and remarkable resilience. Her story, woven from the threads of personal and historical milestones, offers a compelling narrative for those considering the transition to retirement living.

Growing up in Toronto and working in the family business|
Born and raised in Toronto, Rose’s early years living on Brunswick Avenue were rooted in her community and she soon learned the ropes at her father Moishe Grafstein’s fabric store, the family business. “I worked with my father when I was 8 years old, he’d say 'find those zippers with the thread'. I worked with fabrics,” Rose recalled, reflecting on the era’s emphasis on family duty and being industrious. In adulthood the fabric store became more than just a place of work for Rose; it was a cornerstone of her family’s livelihood and a hub of social interaction. “I met very interesting people. I met some actors and actresses. I met Sammy Davis Jr.,” she shared.
