The Legacy Files: Women of Impact

Tales of women shaping our today, in honour of International Women’s Day

Behind every door at an Aspira Retirement Living residence is a story and often, it’s a story of leadership, empowerment, service, and lasting impact. The women who call Aspira their home now have shaped communities, broken barriers, and inspired generations. Their chapters didn’t end at retirement — they simply entered a new season. This is a true testament that leadership and devotion never retire.

Here are some inspiring women you’ll meet at Aspira Retirement Living:

Judie: Confidence in the Saddle

Judie’s lifelong love of horses carried her from the show ring to shaping young lives. An accomplished equestrian with countless awards, she spent 10 years running children’s camps, offering activities that included therapeutic riding. Through horses, she helped children build confidence, find healing, and create unforgettable memories.

For Judie, joy has always been found in the saddle — but her greatest achievement may be the impact she has created.

Carol: Making Waves

Leadership, strength, and grace defined Carol’s career. As a varsity diver at the University of Western Ontario, she excelled in sport before going on to make history as the first female Physical Education teacher at Glendale High School — paving the way for women in athletics and education.

She coached high school teams for years, inspiring young athletes to believe in themselves. Now at 87, Carol still participates in aquatic programs, proving that true leadership and passion never retire.

Jane: A Century of Care

At 102, Jane represents a century of service and impact. She began her nursing career in the obstetrics department at Victoria Hospital in London, helping bring new life into the world. Determined to expand her expertise, she trained at the Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Her commitment to community extended far beyond nursing. Jane volunteered with the Women’s Institute to improve rural life and taught 4-H (Head, Heart, Hands, Health) to young girls, living by the motto: “Learn to do by doing.” Her life is a testament to care, leadership, and empowering others.

Liz: A Queen in Her Own Right

Liz spent 39 years as a dedicated primary school teacher, shaping young minds with patience and care. But her story also includes a royal chapter.

In 1965, she was crowned Dairy Princess of Ontario, later becoming Dairy Princess of Canada. During her reign, she travelled to the Royal Dairy Show in Great Britain, where she had the honour of meeting Queen Elizabeth II. From classroom educator to national ambassador, Liz’s journey reflects poise, pride, and lifelong dedication.

Mary-Lou: Behind the Voices of a NationMARYLOU_CROPPED2

For 45 years, Mary-Lou built a remarkable career at CBC Toronto, focusing on talent recruitment and shaping the voices Canadians welcomed into their homes. Working behind the scenes, she formed friendships with beloved personalities such as Juliette Cavazzi, affectionately known as “Our Pet Juliette” — from her popular CBC variety show.

Her work helped bring Canadian talent to the forefront, leaving a lasting mark on broadcasting history.

Doris: A Lifetime of Service

Service has always been at the heart ofDORIS_CROPPED2
Doris’ life. Alongside her career in the insurance industry, she volunteered for 75 years with the Catholic Women’s League, organizing fundraisers and strengthening her parish community.

As a Captain in the Girl Guides, she worked tirelessly to raise funds so every child could attend summer camp. Doris believed every child deserves the chance to grow, explore, and belong, which she dedicated her life to making that possible.
