Celebrating 105 years: Lessons from Ethel, a remarkable centenarian

Reaching the age of 100 is a rare achievement, but at 105, Orchard Valley resident Ethel Dover embodies a combination of wisdom, strength, and kindness that makes her truly remarkable. Born in Manitoba in 1920, Ethel's early life was defined by independence, curiosity, and a deep love for learning and nature. An only child, she spent countless hours immersed in books, growing a lifelong passion for reading and consuming knowledge.

At just 21, Ethel bravely ventured across Western Canada from her Manitoba home to Vernon, British Columbia, where she worked alongside her aunt and uncle. Her adventurous spirit soon led her to an unforgettable journey — a solo bicycle ride from Vernon to Vancouver. The memorable journey took nearly a week along a partially completed highway and each evening she would rest and recuperate at roadside hotels.

Climbing high
Yet, Ethel's greatest adventure was still to come. At the age of 23, she joined the Vancouver Climbing Club and accomplished a significant feat by summiting one of Vancouver's iconic peaks, known as "The Lions." In 1943, long before established hiking trails and climbing routes existed, Ethel and her team relied on free climbing, securing their ropes only during the challenging final ascent. This courageous climb reflects her enduring spirit of adventure and resilience.

A pioneering feminist before the term was widely recognized, Ethel lived independently, advocating quietly through her actions. Her positivity has sustained her through over 105 years of world events and personal experiences. "There is no secret to a long life," she modestly explained. “I am lucky by my genetics and having no health issues I was born with.” But perhaps Ethel’s true secret lies in her unwavering outlook: "Make the most out of life. Have a quality life, cherish your friends and family, and always be kind," she advised warmly. She acknowledges global troubles but maintains that hope and optimism ultimately prevail.
