Myth Buster: What is the social life at a retirement home like?

Life at a retirement home is what you make it. Whether that means you fill your days by going to the daily activities, in your suite with a good book, exploring the local town, or visiting with friends in one of the lounges.

At Aspira Retirement Living, residences always have a calendar of events, which could include spiritual services, art classes, educational seminars, technology programs, games, horticulture, cooking demonstrations, movie nights, live entertainment, outings, celebrations, BBQs, and more. However, you don’t have to attend any of the programming, and are free to come and go from the residence as you wish.

Aspira Retirement Living also has daily fitness classes that are adapted to meet you at your current fitness level and help you achieve your goals. Of course, there is much more to social life than activities and fitness. It’s about the interactions you have every single day.

Each year at Christmas, a resident at Quinte Gardens Retirement Residence in Bellville, ON works with team members to setup his miniature village and trainset for everyone to enjoy. Some of the pieces belong to him, and some belong to Quinte, but that isn’t what’s important. What’s important is the joy it brings him to see the display, the joy it brings to everyone in the residence.

A good retirement home will foster moments like this, allowing residents to bring their passion with them to their new home. Many activities may be resident run or initiated — like a cribbage group, knitting club, or dog walking group. Others, like men’s pizza and beer night, may be initiated by the residence to bring new possible friendships together.

At Aspira Retirement Living, residences have a private dining room residents can book for family events or just to throw a party with friends. There are also several lounges, where residents and their families can gather informally, and a bistro that serves hot beverages and snacks throughout the day. Usually, you can find at least one table occupied by residents swapping news over a drink and baked good.

Many residents still drive, so they may go out rather than stay in, visiting a local attraction or family and friends. Others prefer not to drive, and simply enjoy the regular outings on the residence bus.

As it is now, life continues to be what you make it, and your time is yours to spend as you wish. The only difference is that friends are closer and if you feel that social itch, an activity is only footsteps away.
