5 tips to make the most of retirement living

You’ve just moved into your new home, and now you’re looking to enjoy every moment: Make new friends, experience new programs, and relax knowing that the necessities are looked after. But where do you start?

Whether you just made the move to a seniors’ apartment, a retirement residence or a long-term care community, we know these 5 tips will enrich your experience.

  1. Participate in activities
Most residences offer a wide variety of activities to choose from. There may be outings, parties, gatherings, classes, clubs and more. This is your time — try everything!

  2. Encourage regular visits from friends and family
Thanks to the beautiful grounds and special areas for visitors, many senior communities are ideal for planning social dates. Make sure to plan time to meet up with loved ones after you move in.

  3. Bring mementos
You may need to downsize when moving into a senior living community, but make sure you keep a few cherished items to decorate your new home.

  4. Stay connected
Social media, smart phones, video calling, and more! There are hundreds of ways to stay in touch. Ask your grandkids for tips or speak with the recreation team at your new home to help set you up and keep you connected to those you love.

  5. Share a meal
Having friends and family visit for meals can help you feel more settled and happier in the early days when things are new. But step out of your comfort zone too. It’s easy to make friends over lunch or in an activity program.

There have been a lot of changes, and it may take a few weeks for you to truly feel at home. By following these steps, we know you’ll be able to enjoy this new adventure!
