Downsize in 5 easy steps

Downsizing can be extremely liberating, allowing you to let go of the things you no longer need as you move forward and make room for new things and life experiences.

“The space in which we live should be for the person we are becoming now, not for the person we were in the past.”

The famous quote, straight from the downsizing queen, Marie Kondo, outlines the true purpose of downsizing. You are clearing a path to who you are and wish to become, while eliminating past burdens.

We hope these five simple tips will help you on your journey. For more tips and information, download our downsizing guide.

  1. Get Started
Take the first step. Start small, and work your way up. Places like the crawlspace, storage room or attic are ideal since they already contain a lot of items you haven’t thought about or used in years.

  2. Set a Schedule
Everything is easier with routine. Dedicate an hour or so each day to sorting through items in your home.

  3. Ask for help
No one said you have to do this alone. Invite over friends or family to help you move furniture and sort through some of your possessions.

  4. Sort things into piles
The simpler, the faster, the better. Make distinct piles for the things you want to donate, give to family, throw out, sell, and keep.

  5. Consider hiring a company to help you
There are companies that will assist you on your downsizing journey. They can help you to organize, plan what to take, pack, move, unpack and settle into your new home. Contact one of them to make the whole process simpler.
